Harvett Family Tree version 3.0

It has been 18 months since the last time I posted an update to the Harvett Family tree. More Harvetts have connected with me and there has been a number of additions and corrections that were applied to the tree. Click on the image to the left for a full view of the latest information that has been collected. THANK YOU to those of you that have reached out and sent me additional information.

I am pleased to see that there are several Harvett babies and toddlers (including my own two boys) that will hopefully continue to carry the Harvett name forward in the future.

As you will see, the connection at the great-grandparent level has still not been made. If anybody has information or knows someone that may have information about the Harvetts that lived before 1900, I would very much appreciate being put in contact with them.

Harvett Family Tree version 2.0

In recent months I have been moderately successful in obtaining some more information from living Harvetts, mostly through Facebook. If you have not signed up for Facebook yet, I strongly encourage it (see post below). I have been able to consolidate two family groups that I had in version 1.0, so now the list is down to 6 family groups only. I believe that more information about the "grandparent generation" (born approx 1900-1920) will allow me to best connect the dots.

PLEASE SEND ME ANY AND ALL INFORMATION THAT YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT YOUR HARVETT FAMILY ROOTS.

Take a look at the attached update to the Harvett family tree (click on the image) and let me know if you see any errors or if you can help me fill in any of the blanks. THANKS

Harvett Family Tree version 1.0

The information in this family tree has been compiled from a variety of sources over many months. It aims to represent the Harvett families of South Africa since the latter half of the 19th century. This list is likely to contain errors and/or discrepancies. Please help me correct these. There are huge gaps in information and no obvious link to the numbered groups at the Great-Grandparent level yet.

Please find your name and the names of your relatives on the list.
Send any corrections or additions (e.g. birth years) to Gavin Harvett, or add a comment to this posting.

Thank you for your assistance! The more feedback I get the more accurate this list will become.

Harvett Family Name History

The English family name Harvett is classified as being of personal name origin. According to scholars the “oldest and most pervasive type of surname is that derived from a given name”. Such family names may be derived from a parental first name or from the font name of the grandfather or indeed a more remote ancestor of the original bearer of the surname. With regard to the family name Harvett, this name is derived from the personal name Harvat or Harvet, diminutive forms of Harvey. Thus the original bearer of this name was known by members of his community as “the son of or descendent of Harvey”. This personal name is derived from the Old Breton name “Haerviu”, meaning “battle worthy”. Occasionally, this name derives from the Old Germanic name “Herewig” meaning “army-war”. Variants of the surname Harvett include Harvat, Harvet, Harvatt, Harvitt and Harvott.

One of the earliest references to this surname or to its variants is a record of Joane Harvatt, daughter of John and Elizabeth Harvatt, whose christening took place in Brockhampton near Ross, Hereford, England, March 6, 1667. However research is ongoing and this name may have been documented even earlier than the dates indicated above.
